Houseowner Insurance covers your residential building (house including fixtures, fittings, garages, walls, gates and fences around the house) while Householder Insurance covers your household contents and personal effects which belong to you or members of your family.
If your house is still under mortgage, it is very likely that your bank would have insured your property against fire and charge the premium to your loan. However, under Bank Negera ruling, your bank cannot force you to buy Houseowner Insurance through them if you wish to buy from other insurance company.
You should take note that the sum insured for a Houseowner Insurance should be based on re-construction cost and not your market value. Your property may be valued RM1million, but cost of re-construction, if destroyed by fire may be only RM500,000. Your sum insured should then be based on RM500,000.
